The Cocoa Cabin Calendar That Decides Your Winter Lights Night in Oak Brook

November 5, 2026

Winter Lights at Central Park opens Friday, Nov. 20, and runs every night through Sunday, Jan. 3. That makes 45 evenings when the half-mile loop at Central Park West is lit from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. and free to walk. The Cocoa Cabin opens on 21 of those nights. Along with hot chocolate, the cabin decides whether there are indoor restrooms and whether a fundraiser or a holiday market is running.

This year's walk also has something new. The Hinsdale Journal reported on Oct. 27 that Central Park will add an animated LED light tunnel this season, paid for by a grant from ComEd's Powering the Holidays program. The Oak Brook Park District was one of 28 municipalities and nonprofits across northern Illinois chosen for the program's sixth year. Grants run up to $2,500 each, and ComEd is spreading $69,500 across all recipients this year. The tunnel joins the dancing trees, rainbow arches, cascading snowflakes, twirling icicles, butterflies and musical hearts already along the loop.

The 21 cabin nights, week by week

The Park District's Cocoa Cabin page lists every night the cabin opens. Oak Brook Magazine reports that the cabin is open from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on those nights, serving hot chocolate and cookies. Here is the full schedule:

Week Cabin nights What else is happening
Nov. 20–22 Fri. Nov. 20, Sat. Nov. 21 Opening weekend for Winter Lights
Nov. 27–29 Fri. Nov. 27, Sat. Nov. 28, Sun. Nov. 29 Thanksgiving weekend
Dec. 3–6 Thu. Dec. 3 through Sun. Dec. 6 Chicago Street Markets Winter Market on Dec. 3; Historical Society Night on Dec. 4
Dec. 10–13 Thu. Dec. 10 through Sun. Dec. 13 No special event listed
Dec. 17–23 Thu. Dec. 17 through Wed. Dec. 23, seven straight nights Chicago Street Markets Winter Market on Dec. 17; Brews & Views on Dec. 20
Dec. 26 Sat. Dec. 26 Last cabin night of the season

The schedule follows a clear pattern. In November the cabin opens only on weekends. In December it moves to Thursday through Sunday, then stays open every night for the week before Christmas. It is dark on Dec. 24 and 25, opens once more on Dec. 26, and then closes for the season while the lights keep running for eight more nights.

What changes on a night the cabin is dark

The cabin's schedule also sets the restroom situation. According to the Winter Lights page, indoor restrooms are open only during Cocoa Cabin hours. On other nights, the only option is a limited set of restrooms on the back side of the Central Park West building. If you're bringing small children or older relatives on a weeknight in early December, plan around that.

The hours don't line up either. The cabin closes at 8:30 p.m., and the path stays open until 9:30. Even on a cabin night, the last hour on the loop has no cabin. If you want both cocoa and the indoor restrooms, arrive before 8:30.

Weather can close everything. The Park District closes the path during heavy snow, ice, rain or lightning, and posts closures on the Winter Lights page. In late December, check that page before you drive over.

Getting there is simple. Central Park West is at 1500 Forest Gate Road. On busy nights, the Park District asks visitors to use the overflow parking marked on its map and not to park on the grass or in undesignated lots.

The half hour before the lights start moving

Every night, cabin or not, the loop opens at 4:00 p.m. for a sensory-friendly half hour. From 4:00 to 4:30, all blinking and moving lights stay still and the music is off. The path is paved and accessible, and it runs one way as a half-mile loop. Leashed dogs are welcome.

On cabin nights, the quiet half hour runs straight into the cabin opening at 4:30. If you want a calmer walk, start at 4:00 on a cabin night. You'll finish the loop just as the cabin opens.

Four nights that do more than serve cocoa

Admission is free, and the Park District takes donations that benefit People's Resource Center and the Oak Brook Park District Foundation. On four cabin nights, the cabin itself is set up for something specific:

  • Thursday, Dec. 3, and Thursday, Dec. 17: Chicago Street Markets brings its Winter Market to the cabin, with local vendors selling holiday gifts.
  • Friday, Dec. 4: Historical Society Night raises money for the Oak Brook Historical Society and its work preserving the community's history.
  • Sunday, Dec. 20: Brews & Views raises money for the Oak Brook Park District Foundation. Alter Brewing Co. is one of the fundraising partners named on the Cocoa Cabin page.

The two market Thursdays make the best weeknight visits. You get the full cabin, indoor restrooms and a reason to stay after the loop, all before the weekend crowds arrive.

Building the rest of the week around Central Park

The rest of Oak Brook's holiday calendar fits around the cabin schedule, and some of the best pairings come from that overlap.

Two mornings line up with cabin nights. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County runs Holiday Refresh Hikes at Fullersburg Woods on Friday, Nov. 27, and Saturday, Dec. 26, each from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Hikers meet at the sign near the Nature Education Center at 3609 Spring Road. The cabin opens that evening on both dates. The Dec. 26 hike falls on the cabin's last night of the season, so you can spend the morning on Salt Creek and the evening at the lights.

Saturday, Dec. 5, works the same way. Graue Mill and Museum at 3800 York Road hosts Mistletoe and Merriment at the Mill from 10 a.m. to noon. That night is a Saturday cabin night, the day after Historical Society Night.

The Drake's tree lighting falls on a dark night. The Drake Oak Brook holds its free annual tree lighting on Wednesday, Dec. 2, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., with carolers, hot chocolate and cookies. The hotel asks guests to bring a canned good for its food drive for a local food pantry. Dec. 2 is not a cabin night, so the Drake covers the cocoa. You can still walk Winter Lights afterward, keeping in mind that only the limited restrooms behind Central Park West are open.

Pet Night falls entirely on dark nights. Oakbrook Center runs Pet Night with Santa on Mondays and Tuesdays from Nov. 23 through Dec. 15, 4 to 7 p.m. Those eight evenings are Nov. 23, 24 and 30, and Dec. 1, 7, 8, 14 and 15, and the cabin is closed on all of them. Winter Lights allows leashed dogs, so you can get the Santa photo and walk the loop on the same evening. The center's regular Photos with Santa on the Lawn run daily from Friday, Nov. 13, through Dec. 24. The center is at 100 Oakbrook Center.

The Drake's ticketed events fill in other dates. The hotel's Thanksgiving Brunch on Nov. 26 has seatings from 10 a.m., with the last at 3 p.m. Its Black Friday "Tea After the Shopping Spree" is on Nov. 27, the same day as the first Fullersburg hike and a cabin night. The Dickens Christmas Dinner on Dec. 11 has carolers from 6 to 8 p.m. and falls on a Friday cabin night. Brunch with Santa and Mrs. Claus is on Dec. 13 and 19, and Brunch with Santa and the Grinch is on Dec. 20. All three have photos from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., so you can do brunch in the morning and the cabin that evening, including Brews & Views on the 20th.

The eight nights after the cabin closes

After Dec. 26, Winter Lights keeps running nightly through Jan. 3 with the same hours, the same quiet half hour at 4:00 and the new LED tunnel. The cabin and its indoor restrooms are done for the season. These are good nights to show the loop to visiting family who come into town after Christmas, and the walk will look the same as it did in mid-December.

The Park District has one more event that week. The Hinsdale Journal lists a Frosty Float Boat Regatta on Dec. 30 on the district's holiday calendar, along with a Turkey Dri Tri on Nov. 22 and a Holiday Book Club starting Nov. 30. Details for all three are on obparks.org. The last lit night is Sunday, Jan. 3, and the path closes at 9:30 p.m.

When family comes to town for the holidays, I want them to see this side of Oak Brook, and the same goes for clients. If you're thinking about your own plans for the year ahead, Amanda Stapleton and my team would be glad to talk them through with you, maybe after a lap around Central Park.
